Help My Reading List, Please.

{via}
My best friend is a librarian. When we lived in the same zip code he used to drop off a stack of books at my office and once I had finished and returned them, he'd drop off another. Now we live about 6 hours apart and I really miss having that personal shopper style librarian. I never had to search for books, I'd just ask him for suggestions and they'd magically appear. He knew my tastes and there was always something amazing in the selection he had for me.

Lately I've been re-reading books I have around my house because I'm not sure what to read next. I need some book suggestions. I like fiction. I'm open to all genres but I'm not much of a mystery reader. I enjoy fantasy and find myself reading a lot of YA books. Recently I've re-read The Hunger Games trilogy and The Song of the Lioness series. I'm not really into chick-lit or fluff books about relationships, shoes or dogs. If it's not fantasy I like books that feel real, that leave an impact after finishing them.

Do you know of any good reads? Give me all you've got, our library is tiny so I'm sure they won't have half of what you suggest so lots of options would be awesome.

P.S. If you ever need book suggestions, there is a tab at the top of my blog that has a list of books I've reviewed here. Some I liked, others, not so much.

  1. As far as YA, Looking for Alaska is good. Not fantasy, but real. Ender's Game if you haven't read it. As for adult books, The Help is always good. Don't worry I won't recommend Jon Krakauer.

  2. If your looking for something different and fun, try reading Carl Hiaasen books. They all take place in Florida and are twistedly entertaining. Christopher Moore has some good reads too. Try "Lamb" or "Practical Demonkeeping". I tend to sway towards mystery type novels or adventure novels. Pick up on of Clive Cussler's earlier books. And in the SciFi genre, read "Dune". It is my favorite. Ooh, also, anything by Michael Crichton is excellent.

  7. I also like The Kite Runner and Looking For Alaska, so I'll have to second those suggestions. I've been into a YA author named Adam Rapp. He has some good books, if not a little strange.

  8. If you like non-fiction at all, I just finished Bossypants by Tina Fey and just loved it. I also like to recommend Kurt Vonnegut and JD Salinger as well as The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway to anyone who hasn't read them.

  9. Your librarian friend sounds amazing to have around! I love to read, but I always have a hard time giving book recommendations...for fantasy, I really like Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time Series. It's reallly long & a little complicated, but I love the depth of details. :)

  11. Hey, I'm usually a bit of a silent reader and am on a bit of a blog hiatus right now. Just doing a bit of blog catch up this weekend :)

    I wonder if you might like the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. I'm currently on book 7. I can't put them down.
    Or The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill - I found this one riveting.

    If you like either of these, I have plenty more suggestions where they came from! Happy reading!
