Synopsis, straight from the back of the book:
"Intense is the word for Ender's Game. Aliens have attacked the Earth twice and almost destroyed the human species. To make sure humans win the next encounter, the world government has taken to breeding military geniuses--and then training them in the arts of war... The early training, not surprisingly, takes the form of 'games.'...Ender Wiggin is a genius among geniuses; he wins all the games... He is smart enough to know that time is running out. But is he smart enough to save the planet?" -The New York Times
I'm just going to say it right out, I loved this book. I stayed up later than I should have to read it all in one sitting. Ender is a very young boy who was bred by the government when his siblings showed promise but didn't have the right personality characteristics to be the one to save Earth. At a very young age he is taken from his family and put into a school for geniuses where they play games in a zero gravity room, trying to outwit their opponents. The world created by the author is fascinating and I'm sad that I can't play the game in real life. It sounds really fun. I think one of my favorite things about the book is how everyone is manipulating each other. The government is manipulating Ender and Ender knows it. Ender's siblings are manipulating the masses and world leaders. I will tell you right now, the part that should be the climax ends up being a little anti-climactic but I sort of liked it that way and I especially loved the last couple of chapters. I can't wait to read some of the other Ender books.
Holy crap, they're coming out with a movie with an awesome cast. Hopefully it turns out well, it should be interesting to see how they translate this into a motion picture.

I've been waiting for the movie for forever. It better be well done or I'm going to riot. I liked the one from Bean's perspective. The name of the book is escaping me at the moment. I think I read two or three more, but they're not as action-y as the Ender and Bean ones.
ReplyDelete@Joslin- it's Ender's Shadow. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Ender's Game!
They have been talking about making a movie for years and years and years. The current version got clearance about the time I got married, so... four years ago? The biggest problem with a film adaptation has always been the age. Producers are terrified of what a public reaction would be to six year olds literally beating each other to death.
I guarantee you the shower scene will be cut, or altered beyond recognition.
Still- totally excited for the movie. :)
uh i have never heard of this book but it sounds pretty fantastic! when i am down with my series i will for sure look out for this one! thanks for sharing, i love reading about stuff like this!

GASP! They're finally making the movie?! :D AH! So excited! Love this book. :)
ReplyDeleteFor the last couple of years I have been thinking about reading this book. It seems like its one of those books that is referenced all the time, but I never really understand the references. Like you, I have some preconceived notions about Sci-Fi, but more recently, I have found myself becoming more open to Sci-Fi novels and actually enjoying them. So, maybe it is time for me to break down and give Ender's Game a shot.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE young adult sci-fi because it doesn't get into such extensive detail but I too have been enjoying more adult sci-fi recently. I've always loved fantasy and while the two genres are definitely different, I love escaping to worlds that are unlike our own.
DeleteOMG YOU HAVE TO READ ALL OF THE ENDER'S SERIES!!!!
ReplyDeletei cried reading almost every book in the series. It's so good so good!! I really really really hope they don't ruin the books with the movie.
I will probably read at least the next two as I've heard they're good but I've heard all the others were just so-so. :(
