Onion Harvesting.

Last night we went over to a friend's house to watch the Boise St. game and then later went out to the bar. I was the designated driver and we stayed out until past close, at which point we all piled in my car. One of my friends told me awhile ago that I could have some onions from his family's farm so we hatched a plan to pick up the onions when we were dropping him off. He ran inside his house, grabbed a box, and then we drove down the road to the onion storage sheds. Have you ever seen how they store onions? I wish I had had my camera with me. Picture a really long garage, I mean, really long, that is full of a giant pile of onions, almost up to the ceiling. Oh, did I mention the garage is taller than normal too? I had never seen so many onions in my life, they have over 200 truckloads of them.

Some of them are the size of a cantaloupe. 

We got the box and started sifting through the onions to find the ones we wanted. I chose a variety of sizes, some of them were giants and others little babies. I'm sure I'll end up getting more onions before the season is over. I use a lot of onions in my cooking and still need to pick up some white and purple onions.

It was kind of eerie going into the giant shed off an old dirt road at 4 in the morning. For some reason somebody else was out on that road and it was a little spooky when they drove by. I love the sense of adventure that accompanies doing something that you know is completely legal but it still feels wrong because you're doing it at such an odd hour and in the dark.
