How To: Yo Yo Brooch/Headband.

Today I finally got around to making a yo yo brooch. I've been meaning to make one for about 2 years now. I guess today was finally the day. Either that or the really cute fabrics I had inspired me. You can find tons of these on etsy if you don't want to make your own.

What you'll need:
fabric (if you don't want to purchase any, cut up old t-shirts)
felt/wool
thread & needle
beads (optional)
pin backs
something round (I used mason jars/soda cans/etc.)
scissors
a pen or chalk

First you'll want to trace around a circular object on the backside of your fabric. The larger the object, the larger your yo yo flower will be.

Next you'll want to cut along your traced line so you have a circle of fabric.

If you'd like, you can sew on some beads. One larger bead in the middle of each yo yo looks really sweet and adorable as well.

I left the back messy because it's just for personal use so it's not a big deal. If I were to give it as a gift or sell it in a shop, I would cover my work with another layer of felt and just sew the two layers of felt together around the outside edges, to give it a polished look. I would then add the pin backs.

If you wanted to make a headband, instead of sewing on the pin backs just simply sew the entire piece onto an elastic headband.

Note: instead of sewing the yo yos to the felt, you could hot glue them.

The reason I wanted to make this is because a few years ago I purchased a cardi from Old Navy with the cutest little flowers. One day it accidentally made it into the wash and the flowers shriveled up and died. I wanted to make something similar that I could take on and off my clothes without it having to go through the wash. I tried once before but I couldn't quite figure it out at the time. Turns out, it's really easy to make a yo yo flower.

I was trying to take a self portrait. This one cracks me up!

Here's a fun story: When I was a wee little child my mom used to take us to this Asian lady for haircuts. Apparently her name was Yo, but I always remembered it as being YoYo. Yo gave my poor little 4th grade self a mullet. It was awful!

Did your mom ever "accidentally" give/get you a terrible haircut?

  2. These are awesome! I feel so inspired whenever I see one of your D.I.Y. posts, but I never feel like I could accomplish them. I also never try, so that may be part of my problem. ;)

My mom never gave me a bad haircut (she was the only one who ever cut my hair.) ...Until. When I was 18 and getting ready to meet Jen for the first time, face-to-face, I wanted a little trim. My sister stepped in and gave me the worst short cut, which didn't fit my round face one bit AND she somehow gave me all these curls. I looked like a poodle!

  4. Nice handiwork there. Now I want to make one. I'm glad you finally got some replacement flowers for that cardi!

P.S. Totally got a mullet when I asked for a pixie cut one time. Oh, the horror!

  6. Haha, now you should put THAT picture on the blog! No, my mom was pretty anal about hair. No bad cuts, fortunately. Those broaches are too cute, and easier to make than I thought!

  8. You're so crafty!

My mom never made my hair too bad...or too cute either... but my grandma once cut my bangs super short and since I already have a cowlick it was...atrocious.

  10. That looks adorable, but unfortunately i'm not girly enough to pull it off.. not even remotely.

When I was about to graduate the sixth grade, my mom made me cut all my hair off into a boy style. No matter how much I protested, she kept insisting and told the stylist to do it. It was literally a boys hair cut, sideburns, even and short on the top, sides, back. It was horrible. For the next 4 years, I was tormented with strangers calling me 'young man' or 'sir' (because I was 6'0 with quarterback shoulders as it is). Even now, people will accidentally call me sir, and I have long hair. I just want to kill myself.
Anyways, the day before I got the haircut, a boy I was in love with smiled at me at my summer camp. It was an 'I like you smile'. The next day, I came in with the haircut and he just burst out laughing with his friend. I still haven't forgiven my mother for ruining what was to be the most epic relationship of my life. Sigh.

  11. Yes. Every time she tried to cut my bangs "straight", and I'd end up with 1 inch long bangs! And every time she'd take me to Yo for a nasty poodle perm!! But, then again, we have the same mom....
