Embroidery.

I made my niece, who is just a wee little one, this embroidery hoop for her wall. This was my first attempt ever so don't judge. Don't worry either, I bought a book on needlework so my future attempts will be much prettier.

I wanted to use burlap because my sister had a lot of it at her wedding. I found that burlap is simultaneously very easy and difficult to use for embroidery. It's easy because it's already in a kind of grid and has holes to push the thread through. It is difficult because the grid nature makes it difficult to make stitches the exact size you want them to be. Using the dark burlap was awesome because I could draw the tulips on the back, giving me a pattern to work from so I wasn't completely winging it, although really it felt like I was.

Even though it looks like an elementary school student did it, I'm still pretty proud of it and I do think it's cute for a little girl's room. Plus, it lets Lana know that Auntie Jordan loves her!

I've been practicing some stitches from my needlework book. Some I like, others not so much. Next I want to get some tracing paper and try out a pattern. Hopefully I can find something that comes with easy instructions and isn't a style circa 1980. I need to set up my printer, I'm sure there is all kinds of awesomeness online. I really like embroidery. Hopefully someday I'll be proficient at it.

  1. A great first attempt, I'd say! And I like the idea of a practice sheet. This post makes me want to get crafty!
